About Accuracy

How accurate is the update-data for the bookmarks?

This depends on the data provided by your blog and your bookmarked sites. Imagine this: a new article was written on June, 15th 2008 at 09:00 hrs PDT (realtime), but the blog’s feed provides the timestamp of June 15th 2008 at 08:00 hrs CET. The plugin will use 08:00 hrs CET to calculate the age of the last update.

And it is the same with the date provided on your blog’s server. If this date is inaccurate, the information provided by this plugin will be inaccurate.

Adding Feed-URLs and Icons to bookmarks

To prepare your bookmarks for the widget, no bookmark needs to be changed. Instead, you may add an additional feed-URL to each of your bookmarks (see screenshot above). This feed-URL can be entered into the “advanced settings”-section of your bookmark-entries.

You don’t need to supply feed-URLs, if you have activated the Google Feed discovery option.

This is the part of your bookmark-management, you probably know already …

… if you scroll further down, you will find the section, where you can enter an additional feed-url and an icon-url for each bookmark. The plugin will use the data you saved here.

Installation

Copy the directory and all files from the archive to the directory /wp-content/plugins/. The paths of the files must be:

/wp-content/plugins/feed-reading-blogroll/

After that, go to your admin-dashboard and activate the plugin.

Furthermore, the plugin will create a JavaScript file in your WordPress content-directory (normally, this is /wp-content/). Therefore, this directory must be writable (chmod 777) at the moment, the Javascript-file is created for the first time. After that, the content-directory does not need to be writable as far as this plugin is concerned. I would recommend the following procedure:

Set /wp-content/ to chmod 777, e.g. by using your ftp-client.
Go to the plugin’s option-page. This will let the plugin create the JavaScript-file.
Go back to your ftp-client and go to /wp-content/. You should find a file called feedreading_blogroll.js in it. Perfect! The plugin will now be able to overwrite this file, even if /wp-content/ is no longer writable, so …
… Set /wp-content/ back to chmod 755.

Language support

The plugin comes with support for Danish, English, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish and German blogs. It can be translated into other languages as well. If you like, you can take the file feedreading_blogroll-de_DE.po and use it as the basis for a translation into your own language. You can contact me, if you have translated the file and I will add the new language to my plugin.

Performance

The feed-date is fetched from Google by using the Google AJAX Feed API.

So the performance relies heavily on Google. The pageload should only be affected in a minimal way.

However, as the widget relies heavily on remote data and the performance of remote servers hosting the feeds, it may happen that you will suffer from poor performance from time to time. In those cases you can deactivate the display of the date-information at the options-panel.

Requirements

You need

a working installation of WordPress 2.7.1, 2.8 or later
a http://code.google.com/apis/ajaxfeeds/ Google API Key. You can get one at Google Code.

Your visitors need to have JavaScript enabled in their browsers to see the update-information.

Settings-Page

When you visit the plugin’s settings-page, you will find five tabs:

Under Options (see next section), you will be able to perform all necessary configurations.
URL-Check will show a list of all your bookmarks. Here you can check, if you have supplied all necessary URLs for your bookmarks.
JavaScript will show you the location of the central JavaScript-file that powers this plugin. You will also find a button that can rebuild the JavaScript. It is normally not necessary to use it. But if the file is corrupt or was deleted, this button can help you

Styling the Blogroll with CSS

This is an example of the XHTML-code that this plugin will generate. You can use the defined classes and ids to apply your css-styles to the elements.

The plugin comes with a css-file named feedreading_blogroll.css. You can modify this file to change the look of the blogroll. If you apply any changes to the file, you should move it to another directory on your server (e.g. /wp-content). Otherwise, the file and your changes might get lost during a plugin-update. You can set the new location of your modifed feedreading_blogroll.css in the plugin’s options. The location must be a valid URL (e.g. http://yourblog.com/wp-content/feedreading_blogroll.css).

Remember that the classes seekxlsnaprM and previewlink for the anchor-element are defined by you over the plugin-options.

Upgrading

You are encouraged to use the plugin-upgrade-function that WordPress is offering.

However. if you would you are preferring a manual upgrade, follow these steps:

Download the most recent zip-file of this plugin and extract the contents.
On your server, where your WordPress-installation is located, delete the contents of this directory: `/wp-content/plugins/feed-reading-blogroll/*`
Upload all the new plugin-files to this directory (`/wp-content/plugins/feed-reading-blogroll/*`).
Login to your admin-dashboard and go to the plugin's options-page.
Click on the JavaScript-tab and push the rebuild-button to generate a new JavaScript-file on the server.

The Widgets

The plugin comes with two kinds of widgets. They are called:

Feed Reading Blogroll
- It can display bookmarks from exactly one link-category. An arbitrary number of instances of this widget can be added to the sidebar. As many of them as you like. If you want to display links from more than one category, add one widget for each category.
Feed Reading Blogroll Multi
- This widget can only be added to your sidebar once. It is called multi, because it can display all your link-categories. Which categories are to be displayed and in which order, can be configured at the pluing-settings-page.
